Getting around town from your apartment to work, to shop or just sight-see in DC, you can depend on the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, or the Metro, to move you from place to place with ease. The Metro operates the second largest rail transit system and the fifth largest bus network in the US in a safe and reliable fashion.
Metrorail and Metrobus serve 3.5 million riders each year

within a 1,500 square-mile area and on a 106 mile rail system and even larger bus system. The area of transit consists of the District of Columbia, the suburban counties of Montgomery and Prince George in Maryland and the counties of Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church in Northern Virginia.
There are five Metrorail lines, Blue, Green, Orange, Red and Yellow, and they are fast and run at high capacity. There are five to six minutes between each train during rush hour during the week, and 12 minutes between each train arrival during midday. To call home (or work if you're running late), all cell phone providers work on the surface, with only Verizon performing in the tunnels. The Metrobus system has over 12,000 stations with 330 routes, bike racks are available on every bus, and all are accessible to people with disabilities. High security systems are in place with both the rail and the bus lines, including two-way radios between operators and the control center and video monitoring and cameras.
Rates went up slightly in January 2008, but remain very affordable, especially in today's fluctuating gasoline price market. It costs $1.25 to $3.10 for a bus fare, and $1.35 to $4.50 maximum for Metrorail, depending on time and day and your age (reduced fares for seniors). Take a ride on the Metro today!
