Just north of the National Mall and the majority of activity in downtown DC is The Black Cat, a great nightclub to see live bands or just to hang out and play pool. Whether or not your apartment is close to the area, it's worth a visit to see excellent local, national and international bands play in a 1,000 person capacity concert hall or the 150 person Backstage to the

Red Room, a pool and pinball room with an awesome juke box. An easy going restaurant, Food for Thought Cafe, will satisfy your hunger before or after the show with veggie and vegan foods, or the more traditional burgers, nachos and BBQ chicken sandwiches.
The Black Cat is a music joint and more. In addition to the aforementioned attributes, this place has screenings of favorite films from such bands as the Clash and the Ramones. DJ's in the Backstage play specific theme music on various nights such as BritPop, vintage Hip Hop and 60's Garage and Soul. The draft beer prices are cheap for downtown at $3.50 each, with bottles at about $5, and several bartenders are known for their heavy hand when serving up cocktails. Why, this place even has an annual Garage Sale called the "Rock 'n' Shop" where you can buy that long lost favorite record or favorite concert t-shirt.
Things to know when you visit the Black Cat are that there is an extensive check-in process with rigorous ID checking and hand stamping. Once you're inside, be aware that all four bars are cash only, with no bartender allowed to run a tab. An ATM machine is located inside, thankfully.
