With lots to look forward to in the new century, Fairfax began extensive redevelopment of the city several years ago. The new Fairfax City Regional Library was added, and a great deal of retail, office and residential leasing properties were built. The hard work
showed, because in May, 2009, Fairfax was ranked #3 on a list of the "Top 25 Places to Live Well" by Forbes Magazine. The factors that contributed to this award included a strong public school system, high median salaries and in the top 1% nationwide of sole proprietors.
Being near the center of action for the US with Washington, DC nearby, and in an early settled area of the country, there are many historical and nationally important sights to see in Fairfax. One is the Fairfax County Courthouse, the oldest building constructed before 1800. The style used at this courthouse was imitated in many Virginia courthouses until about 1850. It now serves as the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts. Another antiquated building that you would want to visit is the Fairfax Museum and Visitor Center. It was originally the first public school of the city built in 1873.
Other noted locations to visit are homes on the Fairfax Historic District list, the Ratcliffe-Logan-Allison House, and 29 Diner, a cool 1940's diner where you can pick up dinner if you don't feel like cooking at your Fairfax apartment.
When you've finished your delicious meal at the diner, you'll want to get out for some recreation, which is abundant here in Fairfax. The City of Fairfax Parks and Recreation Department has a mission to develop and maintain beautiful, safe and environmentally friendly open spaces for the public to enjoy. They also offer a huge selection of activities and programs for all ages of people who live Fairfax apartments, from the youth to senior citizens. Sports and fitness, art, dance and enrichment classes are all part of the package. The Stacy C. Sherwood Community Center is where many of these events are scheduled.
With 23 parks featuring pavilions, picnic areas, sports equipment, ball fields and trails, you can find plenty to do outdoors here. Miles of walking, hiking and biking trails can be found, plus three public swimming pools and several tennis courts are available too.
